A very good rant over at the The thing is on the iniquities of minimum pricing. Well worth the read.

Let’s go to Scotland for our booze.
The law of unintended consequences strikes the Righteous.
A loophole in a new law to curb binge drinking could see wine lovers heading to Scotland for bargain booze.
They really didn’t think it through did they?
Customers are expected to take advantage of the recent Alcohol Scotland Act, which stops two-for-one deals and discounts on wine bought in bulk.
It means chains like Majestic, which only sells in bulk, must now sell individual bottles of wine at the lower multiple-buy price available in England.
And even if they close that loophole, there’s still this.
The day before the law came into effect, Tesco told Scottish customers they could still benefit from online wine deals – as orders were sent from Daventry, England.

Good news at last

Sir Liam Donaldson has quit from his post as head of the NHS. About time too.
As a fully paid up member of the Labour Stasi, he has done as much as any Politician to make our lives more miserable.
Case 1: The Junior Doctor recruitment Debacle.
Case 2: Attempting to have a minimum price for Alcohol introduced.Last night, Remedy UK, which represents junior doctors, said his resignation had come two years too late.
They called on him to go two years ago after the introduction of a botched online application system for junior doctors, which led to hundreds of candidates not being interviewed for jobs.
More than 15,000 doctors failed to find posts and some were forced to seek work abroad.
And earlier this year his relationship with the Government was strained after his plea for a minimum price on alcohol was rejected.
But he was praised for the introduction in 2007 of the smoking ban in pubs and restaurants.
In recent months he has been in charge of swine flu preparations, in which millions have been spent on Tamiflu, vaccines and facemasks.
He is just one of the Killjoys in the society that we live, that should have been hounded out by the mob many years ago. Instead he is jumping ship before the election because he knows damned well that he will be out of a job then.
Wonder which Big Pharma company will be offering him a job?

This is good news
Experts predict the cost of some vintage champagnes could fall as low as £10 in time for Christmas.
But champagne lovers should cash in while they can. French authorities have ruled that next year's harvest will be almost halved, leading to fewer bottles produced to push up prices.

Binge drinking?
The Times reveals today that the recommended weekly drinking limits of 21 units of alcohol for men and 14 for women, first introduced in 1987 and still in use today, had no firm scientific basis whatsoever. That's the bad news. But then comes this:
Subsequent studies found evidence which suggested that the safety limits should be raised, but they were ignored by a succession of health ministers.Gets even better:
One found that men drinking between 21 and 30 units of alcohol a week had the lowest mortality rate in Britain. Another concluded that a man would have to drink 63 units a week, or a bottle of wine a day, to face the same risk of death as a teetotaller.Well that's me out to the Offie to stock up then.
It looks like the bansturbators have been running with this for some time, as the end of the article comes up with this gem:
NazisIn a further attack on Britain’s drinkers, it was revealed yesterday that a coalition of health organisations is mounting a campaign to force a 10 per cent increase in alcohol taxation.
The group, headed by the Royal College of Physicians, is also seeking to secure the support of MPs for stricter regulation of the drinks industry and warnings on alcohol advertising. A total of 21 bodies, including Alcohol Concern and the British Liver Trust, will form the Alcohol Health Alliance, according to Harpers Wine and Spirit magazine.

Let them drink beer
RAF chiefs are appealing for donations so British troops returning from Afghanistan can enjoy a cold beer on their flight home. You know it makes sense.
Dutch brewery Grolsch has donated 10,000 cans, enough for all the personnel coming home after six months away from their families. But Wing Cdr Chadwick would like to be able to offer troops a beer on every military flight out of Afghanistan. "It would be nice to do it all year round, not just for the Rip," he said.
Anyone who wants to contribute to the "Beer for the boys" fund can send a cheque, made payable to "SIF Funds, RAF Brize Norton" and with "Beer for the boys" written on the back, to Wing Cdr Chadwick at 216 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire OX18 3LX.

Whisky galore
Once they've as always tested it out on the Scots (remember they had the smoking ban first), then it'll be the turn of the English and the Welsh.
They might do well to remember that there will be an election and would do well to bear that in mind before they get carried away in their own self importance.
As someone else has bagged the franchise rights to start up an alcohol superstore in Berwick-on Tweed, I'm requistioning the right to set up in Gretna.
When are we going to be rid of this sanctimonious drivel? The Brown Broadcasting Company ran it as their top story this evening. We will need a dram or two to get through the next few years.
Sorry about the vid.
