A letter

Sometimes you need to contact your MP in order to set him on the path to redemption. In this case my MP is a first time incumbent to parliament so I sent this in order to gauge his reactions to the below information.
Attn: Thomas Tugendhat MP
Tonbridge and Malling
Monday 14 December 2015

Dear Thomas Tugendhat,
The opposition have called a debate on the Cumbria floods tomorrow, 15th Dec. It is my understanding that the HoC Library has issued a briefing paper (file:///C:/Users/Philip/Downloads/CDP-2015-0128.pdf) where the lead author is named as one, Sara Priestly. She says in the paper that:
“...there is a general understanding that climate change is likely to be linked to increased winter rain in the UK.”
The briefing paper also suggests that further reading can be found from a paper published by Friends of the Earth which, as I understand it, is not even Peer-reviewed. This quotation is not only at odds with the SPM issued by the UNIPCC, but is also at odds with the information issued by Dr Richard Betts at the UK Met Office.
Furthermore, I have discovered that Sara Priestly once worked for Friends of the Earth so is hardly an unbiased author. I am immensely concerned that our MPs are being given biased advice on what some world leaders say is the greatest threat to mankind. If that is the case, it would help enormously if the information provided to our legislators was from un-biased sources.
I can only hope that, late as it is, you will be able to pass on some of this information to your colleagues in the debate.

Yours sincerely,

The Filthy Engineer

It'll be interesting to see what he comes back with.

  1. What makes you think he'll respond with anything? If British-critter MPs are anything like Canuckistan MPs, I reckon you'll receive a reasonable facsimile of a form letter thanking you for your interest in Democracy and that your concerns will be taken under advisement.
My MP is of the Party no reduced to play the role of Her Majesty's Loyal Oppostion. She is anti-Gay, anti-abortion and very pro-military, which is very convenient considering her riding is primarily populated with inbred catholics who work to support a Military Base. Everyone in the entire Riding, in one way or another, owe their entire livelihood to the largesse of the various levels of Government.
Having bored the fuck out of you with all that, what I do to catch the interest of my MP is to stand outside her/its/his Constituency Office with a sign that reads: "The Honourable So and So has not publicly denied having had an abortion after being impregnated by her Gay lover." Works a treat it does.

  2. “...there is a general understanding that climate change is likely to be linked to increased winter rain in the UK.”

I do not understand why you are having trouble with this statement. It is completely innocuous. It is neither supporting the construct of anthropogenic climate change nor denying it. It is neutral. AND it was specifically crafted to read as such.

    Facts:
    A) There is a public perception of a normal level of winter rains in the UK. It may be right or it may be wrong, but the public has an anecdotal perception and belief in what is a normal level of winter rain. Without such, it would be impossible to determine if in any given winter, there has been an increase or a decrease. Yes? Most people won't believe real statistics especially if this data conflicts with what they feel in their ill educated gut.

    B) If it is perceived, rightly or wrongly, by the public that there has been an increase in the amount of winter rains in the UK, this is a change. The amount of winter rain is not normal, it has 'changed'. There has been a 'change' in the amount. Now the use of the word 'change' here has nowhere near the connotation attached to the phrase 'climate change', but it is the same. More rain, if perceived as such, is a change from the normal and it is a change in the normal climate? Of course a 'change in climate' is linked to 'increased rains' because increased anything is a 'change' and rain is part of 'climate'. The phrase 'Climate Change" has absorbed a certain connotation, and the writer - presumably Sara Priestly - is aware of that, but she is not actually saying what you think she is saying. She knows people will infer from the phrase/words: 'Climate Change', 'linked', 'general understanding' all the Political crap with which these words/phrases are burdened.
What she is actually saying - in pure English as would be determined in Court by Lawyers - is:

Winter rain is part of the climate in the UK. An increase in the amount of rain is by definition also a change in the amount of rain - like duh? Innit? AND it is generally understood that an increase in any stable state is also a change in that stable state - like duh? Innit.

People with agendas and/or poor reading comprehension will 'read' into her simple, almost intellectually insulting, statement what they 'want' to read into it.

I think Orwell would have had a name for this type of Political Speak had he bothered

    1. Ms. Priestly knows exactly how here statement will be 'understood' by unlettered readers and her use of the word 'linked' is particularly evil. It is used specifically to ensure she is 'misunderstood' in precisely the intended way.
What she is actually saying is:

"A change in a stable state is linked to a change in a stable state."

      The lesson here my friends?

Read very deeply and know that you are being manipulated ALL THE TIME!!!!!
