Almost.
I've been laid low by some virus that thinks it should emulate Ebola. That's the good bit.
In the meantime my desktop decided to fry the hard drive and ended up with the blue screen of death.
However the worst part of the story is that I've now got to get to grips on my new desktop, with, wait for it, Windows 8.1.
Why does a company that has produced a reasonable product in windows 7, decide to throw the whole lot in the air and produce something that is really not fit for purpose?
hopefully I might have a decent post or two up in the next few days
Welcome back. You have been missed.
ReplyDeleteI trust your new computer is a little more advanced than this;

Can you rescue your files, from a back-up, maybe?
ReplyDeleteHad you considered a Mac?
I was so put off by Windows 8 I gave up and donated my new laptop to my 7 year old grandson (he seems able to use it!). The good news for you is there are rumours that Microsoft may provide a free update of their next OS, Windows 10 to all Windows 8 users.
ReplyDeleteYeah welcome back.
ReplyDeleteA good climate change aggeddon post would be a good subject....all this talk about global warming and them there ice sheets in Antarctica are expanding, and bloody hot Halloween too.
Rickie
For various reasons I got stuck with Windows 8.1. Hated it. I installed Classic Shell and did some tweaking so now it looks and feels like Windows 7.
ReplyDeleteThey say that hot whiskey is good for Ebola?
Classic shell was preinstalled on the computer. It just needed activating
DeleteHot?? Won't that drive off the alcohol?
ReplyDeleteAlcohol boils at 84 degrees centigrade,Well it did when i had a still!
Deleteoop,s 78.5 centigrade
DeleteGood to have you back -- we've missed you. Keep well and hope that Windows 10 is better than 8.1. Or you could always use Linux.
ReplyDeleteeither way, best regards from me.
In the words of Paul Calf, one of Steve Coogan's characters, Win8 is a "bag of shite".
ReplyDeleteIf you have Win7 source disks, I'd put that on the new beast. Good luck with it and I'm glad you've beaten the bugs.
I spent $5 on a programme by Stardock to make windows 8 act a bit like 7. Having used the laptop 3 times in the first week as a frisbie it seemed like a good investment. It is now very usable. Read somewhere that Microsoft were still having to sell businesses 7 because they wouldn't retrain staff to use 8!
ReplyDeleteWould that be the same well known software company that's just decided to fuck up a well known mobile phone company?
ReplyDeleteJust remembered why I paid through the nose for a Mac.
Can you not install an old Windows version that actually works?
Welcome back. Without a steady supply of sarcastic wit I'm forced to inflict my own ramblings on newspaper online forums. The intellectual effort involved is costing me a small fortune in cheap wine.
