Iconic “Health and safety “, get stuffed.
Just a couple of pics taken during the building of the Empire State Building.
The days when men were men.
Incidentally only five men died on the building project. One of which died from being run down
I've always wondered about whether those photos were "real" or had been re-touched ..
Obviously, PS etc weren't around at that time but other "iffy" photos were .. like the one purporting to show Faeries in a garden, along with a child ..(somewhere in UK, can't remember where off hand)..
If they are genuine, then the blokes concerned had far more "bottle" than I'll ever have ..
Captain Haddock, the photos are from the construction of the Empire State Building by Lewis Wickes Hine. Those two photos are the most famous but there are other, equally stunning photos from the same collection. :)
Not for me! l prob even couldnt do it on hands and knees!
ReplyDeleteI'm not afraid of heights per se, but I would definitely draw the line at that!!

ReplyDeleteand men were desperate for work of any kind.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to go up and down there everyday I'd be run down too. In fact once would probably do it for me.
ReplyDeleteThat first image was popular as a blown-up art print a few years back.

I used to parachute jumps when I was younger. The first jumpf from 2,500 feet was terrifying. But at least I had 2 chutes.

ReplyDeleteP.S. There is also extensive video footage and a great documentary about it that I'm sure can be found on YouTube :)

ReplyDeleteYou won't catch me disembarking from a perfectly serviceable aeroplane in mid air....
It wasn't that serviceable. 6 months later, it had an engine failure on take off, and ploughed into a tree.
ReplyDeleteNative American Indians were famous for their exploits on the high steel.

A friend used to have a 4ft x 6ft print of that first picture on his wall. I used to feel queasy just looking at that!
