Snow and motoring

When are we going to teach people to drive in snow? I’ve just spent 3 hours on the slowly orbiting car park around London.(M25). Some of the driving defies belief. Being overtaken by idiots driving in blizzard conditions at a rate that is dangerous at the best of times is stupid. At the other end of the spectrum is the idiot who drives so slow compared with the average, that lorries appear to overtake nearing light speed.

One piece of interest was some sort of incident on the opposite carriage way. I’d love to know why there was a need for eight fire engines?

  1. Greetings from the deep SouthWest.
    What snow?
It's been so cold that the early daffs got a chill but other bulbs are still happy. At least it's too wet to cut the lawn(again)!!!

  2. It's my firm belief that many drivers think that their modern car with abs and 4wd will allow them to drive the same way in any conditions.

  5. Like the man who complained about blowing hot and cold out of the same mouth, Anonymous at 5 February 2012 08:45 seems to have a too narrow view of the world.

    Best regards

  6. I know I'm not a very good driver. That's why I need to be careful. Noting that being too cautious can be nearly as dangerous, particularly in poor visibility, as being reckless.

What annoys me is the large number of people who are clearly much worse drivers than me. Especially when I consider how much of my insurance premium is there becuse of them.

  8. About there being eight fire engines on the motorway, I think they are trying to justify their existence, how often do we hear of big fires nowadays? In our town recently there was a fire in a terraced house, not much damage yet five engines and thirty crew turned up, that many blokes from the local pub could have peed on it and put it out. Also, when a woman jumped off the motorway bridge a fire engine was called in to shield the scene, what's wrong with a police incident tent, much cheaper.

  9. How can you expect anyone to be taught how to drive in snow - it was going to be a thing of the past thanks to global warming...

"It's my firm belief that many drivers think that their modern car with abs and 4wd will allow them to drive the same way in any conditions"

Having managed without ABS on both 2 & 4 wheels for almost 40 years, I wasn't much impressed with my first (deliberate) test of it today. A horrendous racket emanated from under the bonnet at the slightest touch of the pedal. Obviously it was very slippery, but having no feedback, AND finding that I could move the steering wheel from side to side and still continue in a straight line, was not what I expected (or what the claims for such systems would have you believe).

A set of proper winter tyres is far more beneficial, and now I've had the luxury (although that is a relative term) of selectable 4WD in my old Panda, I can assure you that it is possible to continue in a fairly normal fashion.

Until the roads are totally blocked by numpties slithering about in their "Ultimate Driving Machines", that is...

Same as that md. When ABS cuts in, I feel like I've lost control. They used to teach stuff like cadence braking, which gave you much more control. Now your life is subject to the whim of the onboard computer.

I taught myself, and subsequently made good use of it on a number of occasions. Granted, most of those were as a result of "youthful exuberance", but I avoided vehicular damage on each occasion. I still have vivid memories of shuddering to a stop 3 feet away from another car when in my employers Vauxhall HA Viva van, then looking round at the apprentice beside me. His face was as white as a sheet...
